Parent Partners Mentorship Program
Because no parent should walk this journey alone.
When a child is diagnosed with Down syndrome, families often experience a mix of emotions — love, fear, questions, uncertainty, and hope. In those early days, what matters most is connection to someone who understands.
The Parent Partners Mentorship Program connects new and expectant parents with trained volunteer mentors who have lived experience raising a child with Down syndrome.
It is support from someone who has been there — and is still there.
What Is the Parent Partners Program?
Parent Partners is a structured mentorship initiative that matches trained volunteer parents with families who are:
- Navigating a new or prenatal diagnosis
- Seeking guidance in early childhood
- Looking for connection and reassurance
- Wanting to better understand medical, educational, and community resources
Our trained mentors provide:
- Emotional support
- Practical guidance
- Resource navigation
- Hope grounded in real-life experience
This program is not clinical.
It is relational.
It is peer-to-peer.
It is powerful.fe.
Why We do This
Families consistently tell us the same thing:
“The first person I spoke to who truly understood made all the difference.”
Research and lived experience both show that early connection reduces isolation, strengthens resilience, and builds long-term engagement within the community.
Through this program, we:
- Strengthen families from the very beginning
- Improve access to accurate information
- Support positive first experiences after diagnosis
- Build long-term community involvement
When families feel supported early, they are more likely to:
- Engage in inclusive education
- Advocate confidently
- Participate in community programs
- Become mentors themselves
This is how community sustains itself.
What it means to our community
The Parent Partners Mentorship Program is one of the most impactful initiatives we offer.
- Extends our medical outreach beyond information and into relationship
- Bridges hospitals, early intervention, and community support
- Builds a network of confident, empowered families
- Creates leadership opportunities for seasoned parents
This is generational impact.
Today’s mentored family often becomes tomorrow’s mentor.
Our most recent Training Cohort
We recently completed our newest Parent Partners training, equipping a group of dedicated volunteer parents with the skills and tools needed to serve families with compassion and clarity.
This professional training was provided by the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress (MDSC), a nationally respected leader in Down syndrome advocacy and family support programming.
The training was made possible through sponsorship by First 5 Kern, whose investment ensures families of young children receive strong, early support.
During training, mentors learned:
- Effective listening and communication skills
- How to support families after a new diagnosis
- Cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed awareness
- Ethical mentorship boundaries
- How to connect families with local and national resources
We are proud to now have an expanded network of trained mentors ready to serve families throughout Kern County.
Ongoing commitment
We plan to offer Parent Partners training twice per year, continuing to grow our mentorship network and ensure families have access to consistent, high-quality peer support.
Sustaining and expanding this program requires ongoing community investment.
